This project was developed for a book that explores Lafcadio Hearn’s personal experiences with race, using typography as the main narrative tool. The editorial style centred on typographic solutions to express the emotional and cultural complexities of Hearn’s journey, highlighting themes of racial identity and belonging.

Process

The process involved researching Lafcadio Hearn’s life, typesetting with expressive typography, and creating branding elements. A key challenge was conveying Hearn’s emotional depth through type, which was addressed by hand-sketching and vectorising expressive typefaces in Adobe Illustrator.

Results

The thoughtful use of typography, binding, and paper choices enhanced the storytelling, while the expressive typefaces added depth and emphasis to key moments. The branding, including the poster design, complemented the book’s narrative, resulting in a cohesive and impactful final product.
